CYB #54 Joy-scrolling Presidential Election Memes, Summer Reading and Watching
What AI Workshops Would You Like to Take This Fall? Seeking your input
We have a Democratic campaign with fervor! People of all ages are excited, smiling, and energized. I’ve been collecting memes and mash-ups, and while you have probably seen all of these, I want to kick off with my favorites in case you’ve missed them. (Also, how my music obsession, Chappell Roan, is getting integrated into all this just thrills me.) Here we go!

READING
Exit Interview: The Life and Death of My Ambitious Career, by Kristi Coulter, Macmillan, 2023
When it came out last year, I heard about this book, a memoir by a female upper-level manager at Amazon, but I just got around to reading it now. Kristi Coulter’s story of her eleven years in different roles at the massive e-commerce company is so good that I want to buy it for at least six of my friends who were also tech women working in highly male-dominated environments (as I was). Coulter just nails everything, from the thrill of success (and money!) to the pained realization that Senior Directorship or VP promotion probably isn’t going to happen because managers’ standards for seeing excellence in women require them to be superhuman 24/7.
Out of the Office, Unlocking the Potential of Hybrid Work, Charlie Warzel and Anne Helen Peterson, Penguin/Random House, 2023
Warzel and Petersen are both great writers and a married couple. Written during the pandemic, the book is fine, but Chapter 7, a Letter to Workers, really gripped me. The advice about how to think about integrating your work and your life is priceless. And spot on.
WATCHING
Cocaine Bear: I have a pop-culture passion for artfully made bad movies, which are usually good movies with less pretentious narratives and great actors. In that spirit, Cocaine Bear does not disappoint. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, this just shy of over-the-top campy saga is based on a true story about a Kentucky national park, $2 million worth of cocaine, and a bear. It's totally a fun watch!
COOKING
What isn’t great about summer stone fruit, tomatoes, and corn here in California (and in many spots across the country)?
A couple of dishes that my family devoured:
Sesame Tomato Salad, by Kay Chun (NYTimes gift link): The sesame and soy dressing for this salad was so tasty and flavor-rich that I made it several times during the past week. It's easy and so good.
Crunchy Peach Crumble, recipe by Melissa Clark (gift link): Baking the crumble topping separately, as this recipe calls for, is a pain, but it was 1000% better than the other recipe I tried, hoping to save time.
